Problem Barking in Dogs

Problem barking can be a big problem both for a dog owner and for their neighbours.

In most residential areas it is against the law to allow your dog to bark for an excessive period - and "excessive barking" is often judged to be as little as 10 minutes. If you do not prevent your dog from such nuisance barking, the authorities often have the power to impound your dog - or worse!

Puppy barking problems are often associated with a dog being left alone either inside a home or in the backyard when the owner is at work. You might not even know the dog is a nuisance barker until it is too late and the neighbours have complained to the authorities.

On a less "official" level, a dog can also be a real problem if it is always barking when you or the family are at home (even sometimes when you arrive home!). Children can be very disturbed by a constantly barking dog. Also, the last thing most parents want is to have their children "learn" that they should yell at the dog all the time to be quiet.

How to Stop Nuisance Barking?

An extreme - and controversial - solution to a nuisance barker can be an operation called de-barking. This involves surgical adjustment or removal of the dog's vocal chords. Obviously that really is the last thing most people want to do.

Many experts believe the best way to stop your dog barking is through positive behaviour modification training and calming techniques. We have a special section in our online book store on how to stop nuisance barking (at the bottom of this page), where you can find many books on these subjects.

No-Bark Collars and Citronella Sprays

Sometimes special collars are used which emit a citronella spray near the dog's face whenever the dog barks. Citronella collars are sometimes considered a relatively mild negative-reinforcement technique. Other types include untrasonic collars and even electric shock collars.

We suggest you read about the different non-collar techniques (the Positive Reinforcement and Calming ones) first. However, if you decide you might try a no-bark collar, then we suggest you research these and read-up on them thoroughly first. If in the end you decide to try it, you'll find a wide range of such collars and other training supplies in our online store.

Please browse though the publications on these pages to see what you think might work for your dog. Also, please have a look at some of the training products in our online store catalogue. You may also find useful ideas in some of the more general catalogue sections, for example, in the Dog Whisperer and Celebrity Dog Trainers sections.

We hope you have success in solving your dog barking problem!
